41 The Laws and CBGB’s

Music is especially interesting because the two most important laws which govern reality are embedded in music. One is in the Cycle of Fifth/Fourth’s—the Law of Seven with its skewed asymmetry. This law explains why you might go to the store for butter and return with fish.

The other law, the Law of Three, determines musical movement which is driven by the dissonance of the tritone or Devil’s Interval: Lucifer in the role of the “Cosmic Sacrifice of Satan.” This is the Cosmic Equivalent of the Earthly Christ Lord Jesus and His Sidekick Scapegoat Judas Iscariot, without whose seal we would not have the ancient play first written in Egypt and then played out in real life by the Passion.

One of the questions journalists usually ask is, “Did you know that this CBGB scene was going to be as influential as it has become?” I’m the only person I’ve ever heard say, “Yes, I knew it was going to be something huge.” Even Tom Verlaine would say no, although hesitantly. But I had the whole thing organized like an Einstein thought experiment, only it was not an experiment. I didn’t name the bands, but Terry Ork and I booked the place for three and a half years—that is I gave him some help when he was unsure about a band.

Terry Ork and I are more responsible for the success of the club than Verlaine and Richard Hell or Television itself. Ever since I was a child I have been able to join with someone and begin something that would turn into a large crowd. I had a force like an enzyme or catalyst—more like an enzyme, which is something that causes other things to happen without changing itself. Some people have implied that the success of CBGB’s and Television was due to being in the right place at the right time. I bristle at that, because they are demeaning my involvement of which they know very little.
